Looking after it

Air it after every session rather than leaving it in a kit bag, because it sits against the neck and it will hold sweat. Wash it as the label directs, usually cool and gentle, and dry it flat away from a radiator. Replace it if the padding compresses flat or the closure stops holding, since a guard that moves is not covering anything.

Neck And CollarbonePadded coverage across both
Adjustable FitSnug without being tight
Breathable PolyesterWorn against the skin for a full session
Free SizeOne size, adjusted to the wearer

Padded polyester coverage for neck, shoulders and collarbone.

Breathable, adjustable and shaped to the neck, so it gets worn instead of left in the bag. Read the certification note before you buy it for competitive ice hockey.

A padded neck guard in breathable black polyester, shaped to follow the curve of the neck.

Coverage extends across the neck, shoulders and collarbone.

Free size, with a quick adjustment so it sits snug rather than loose.

Comfortable enough to wear for a full session, which is the practical test any neck guard has to pass.

Sold as padded protective wear. It is not certified cut resistant neck protection, so check your league's rules before buying it for competitive play.

Hockey Neck Guard

A neck guard only works if it is worn, and the reason players leave them in the bag is almost always comfort.

Hockey Neck Guard

This one is breathable polyester, shaped to the curve of the neck, and adjustable, which are the three things that decide whether it stays on for a full session or comes off after the warm up.

Hockey Neck Guard

The coverage runs across the neck and down over the shoulders and collarbone, which is the area that takes knocks from sticks, pucks, boards and other players.

Hockey Neck Guard

Now the part the original listing did not say. Competitive ice hockey in a growing number of leagues requires neck protection certified to a cut resistance standard, and certification is a specific test rather than a description. No such certification is held for this item.

Hockey Neck Guard

For training, recreational skating, junior sessions and other high impact sports where padding is what is wanted, it does the job it is built for.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this certified cut resistant neck protection?

No. No cut resistance certification is held for this item, and we would rather say so than let you assume it.

Can I use it in a league that requires certified neck protection?

No. If your league mandates a certified cut resistant guard, buy one that carries that certification and check the documentation.

What is it then?

A padded, adjustable neck and collarbone guard for training, recreational play and other high impact sports.

What is it made of?

Polyester.

What colour is it?

Black.

What size does it come in?

Free size, with an adjustment so it fits snugly.

Will it fit a child?

The adjustment covers a range, but a free size adult item may be large on a young child. Check the measurements on the photos.

What does it cover?

Neck, shoulders and collarbone.

How tight should it be?

Snug enough that it does not rotate when you turn your head, loose enough that swallowing and breathing are completely comfortable.

Will it be too hot?

It is breathable polyester, which is what makes a full session bearable.

Is it comfortable enough to actually wear?

That is the main design goal. A guard that gets taken off protects nothing.

Can I wear it under a jersey?

Yes, that is how it is normally worn.

Does it restrict head movement?

It is shaped to the neck for that reason. Fit it correctly and it should not.

Can I use it for other sports?

Yes, it is described as suitable for other high impact sports.

Can I use it for roller hockey?

Yes, subject to whatever your organisation requires.

Does it protect against a puck?

It is padding, so it cushions impact. It is not certified against cuts or against a puck at speed.

Does it protect against a skate blade?

No. That is exactly what cut resistant certification exists to test, and this item does not hold it.

How do I wash it?

Follow the care label, normally a cool gentle wash. Dry it flat and away from a radiator.

Can I machine wash it?

Check the label on the item you receive. Cool and gentle is the usual answer.

Will it smell?

Anything worn against the neck will if it lives in a kit bag. Air it after every session.

When should I replace it?

When the padding has compressed flat, when the closure stops holding, or after any significant impact.

Is it waterproof?

It is described as having water resistant properties to keep the neck dry, not as a waterproof garment.

Is it unisex?

Yes.

Does it come as a pair or single?

One guard.

Is it suitable for beginners on the ice?

It is a sensible piece of padding for a beginner. Check your rink's requirements as well, since some rinks set their own.

Do you sell certified neck guards?

Not currently. We would rather point you to a certified product than sell you the wrong one.

Why does the product name say Hockey Neck Guard then?

Because that is the product category and the name it is sold under. The certification note above is there so the name does not do the talking.

Can I wear it over a jersey?

It is designed to sit against the neck, so under is where it works.

How long does delivery take?

Five to seven days across the UK. Under £75 there is a £25 delivery charge.

Can I return it?

Yes, unused and in a saleable state. It is a stock item, so the full 14 day right to change your mind applies alongside your faulty goods rights.

What a neck guard does, and what certification means

4 min read The Outdoor Sports Company

Two different products with one name

"Neck guard" covers two things that are not the same.

Padded neck protection. Foam and fabric that cushions knocks from sticks, pucks, boards and collisions. Comfortable, widely worn, and what this product is.

Cut resistant neck protection. A garment tested and certified against blade cuts to a specific standard. It looks similar. It is not the same item, and the difference is a laboratory test.

This one is the first kind. That is stated on the product page and repeated here because it is the thing that actually matters when someone is buying.

Why leagues have started mandating the second kind

Neck laceration injuries in ice hockey are rare and severe. Over the last few years a number of governing bodies and leagues, particularly for junior play, have moved from recommending to requiring certified cut resistant neck protection.

Requirements differ by country, by league and by age group, and they have been changing.

Before buying any neck guard for competitive play, check your own league's current rule. If it mandates certification, only a certified product satisfies it, and the certification will be documented by the manufacturer.

Where padded protection makes sense

Plenty of situations, and it is worth being clear about them.

Training sessions and drills. Recreational skating. Junior sessions where padding is what is asked for. Other high impact sports where knocks rather than cuts are the risk. Anyone who simply wants their collarbone and neck covered.

Fitting it properly

Snug, not tight. It should not rotate when the head turns, and it should never affect breathing or swallowing.

Under the jersey. Against the neck is where the shaping works.

Check it after the warm up. Most guards that end up in a bag were fitted wrong at the start rather than uncomfortable by design.

Replacing it

Padding is consumable. Replace the guard when the foam has gone flat, when the closure will not hold, or after any significant impact.

A guard that slides out of position during play is not protecting anything, whatever it is made of.

Page summary

Hockey Neck Guard, also sold as a Neck Protector For Hockey or Neck Guards, from The Outdoor Sports Company at myoutdoorsports.co.uk. A padded neck guard made of breathable black polyester, free size and adjustable, shaped to follow the natural curve of the neck. Price GBP 39, reduced from GBP 49. The protected area covers the neck, shoulders and collarbone. It is intended for ice hockey and other high impact sports. IMPORTANT: this item is padded protective wear. No cut resistance certification is claimed or held for it, and a number of ice hockey leagues now require neck protection certified to a cut resistance standard, so anyone buying for competitive play must check their league's requirement and buy a certified product if one is mandated. Care: air after every session, wash cool as the label directs, dry flat away from direct heat, and replace it if the padding has compressed or the closure no longer holds. UK wide delivery, free over GBP 75, otherwise GBP 25, arriving in 5 to 7 days. A stock item, not made to order, so the 14 day change of mind cancellation right applies in full.
