Looking after it

Wipe the synthetic leather down after sessions so sweat does not sit on the seams, and check the chains, swivel and bracket bolts once a month, because a bag works its own fixings loose over time. Rotate the bag a quarter turn every few weeks so it settles evenly rather than developing one flat side.

A 5ft bag that arrives filled and ready to hit.

Synthetic leather over a pro fill, hung on a steel suspension system with a chain pivot, which is what keeps the noise down and the shape square.

A 5ft (150cm) heavy bag that arrives filled, so there is nothing to stuff and nothing to buy separately.

The cover is a strong synthetic leather with a thick coating, made to take repeated contact without splitting at the seams.

It hangs on a steel suspension system with a chain pivot, which cuts the rattle and clatter of a traditional hang.

The extended strap design is what keeps the bag square rather than pear shaped after a few months.

Punching Bag

A 5ft bag is the size that works in a normal room. Long enough to work body shots and head height on the same bag, short enough that the ceiling is not a problem in a garage.

Punching Bag

It arrives filled. That sounds minor until you have filled one yourself, because a badly filled bag is hard at the bottom, loose at the top and never recovers.

Punching Bag

The cover is synthetic leather with a thick coating, and the extended straps spread the load through the whole bag rather than hanging it all from the top seam. That combination is what stops a bag going pear shaped.

The steel suspension and chain pivot do two things. The pivot lets the bag turn instead of winding up the chains, and the whole system is quieter than a traditional hang, which matters far more in a house than anyone expects before they own one.

A bag rewards technique more than force. Distance, footwork and timing are what it teaches, and hitting it hard is the least useful thing you can do on it.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall is the bag?

5ft, which is 150cm.

Does it come filled?

Yes. It arrives pre-filled and ready to hang.

Do I need to buy filling?

No, and that is worth having. A self filled bag is usually hard at the bottom and soft at the top.

What is the cover made of?

Synthetic leather with a thick coating.

Will the seams split?

The coating and the extended strap design are both there to spread load rather than concentrate it on a seam. Wipe sweat off, because salt on stitching is what ages it.

How does it hang?

On a steel suspension system with a chain pivot.

What does the pivot do?

It lets the bag turn freely instead of twisting the chains up, which is what makes a bag jump about awkwardly.

Is it noisy?

Quieter than a traditional hanging bag. That is what the steel suspension system is for, and it is the difference between using it in the evening and not.

What can I hang it from?

A wall bracket, a beam, a rafter or a bag frame rated for the weight and for a swinging load.

Does it come with a bracket?

Check the product photos for what is included in current stock. The mounting point has to suit your wall or ceiling either way.

Can I hang it from a garage rafter?

If the rafter is structural and rated for a dynamic load, yes. A swinging bag pulls far harder than its standing weight.

Can I hang it in a bedroom?

Only from something structural. Plasterboard alone will not hold a heavy bag, whatever the anchor claims.

Will it damage my ceiling?

Not if it is mounted into structure. Damage happens when a bag is hung from something that was never meant to carry it.

Do I need gloves?

Yes. Bag gloves or wraps at minimum. Bare hands on a heavy bag is how hands get hurt.

Does the bag protect my hands?

The construction absorbs impact, which is easier on the hands than a hard bag. It does not replace wraps and gloves.

Is it suitable for kicks?

It takes kicks, and a 5ft bag is a good height for low and mid kicks. For high kicks you would want a longer bag.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. Start with technique and combinations rather than power, which is what the bag teaches best.

Is it suitable for children?

With supervision, gloves and light contact. A heavy bag is heavy, and swinging weight is the thing to watch.

How much space do I need?

Enough to circle the bag: allow about a metre clear all round, more if you kick.

Will it swing a lot?

A filled bag swings less than an empty one and settles as you learn to hit it correctly. Chasing a swinging bag is a technique problem, not a bag problem.

Can it be used outdoors?

Under cover, yes. Permanent weather exposure is hard on any synthetic cover and on the chains.

How do I stop it going pear shaped?

Rotate it a quarter turn every few weeks. The extended straps do most of the work, and rotation does the rest.

How do I clean it?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it. Sweat left on the surface is the main thing that ages the cover.

How often should I check the fixings?

Monthly. Chains, swivel and bracket bolts all work loose slowly on any bag.

Can I adjust the height?

Yes, by changing where the chains attach or adding a length of chain, so the bag hangs where your work needs it.

How heavy is it?

It is a filled 5ft bag, so it is a two person lift to hang. Plan that before you start.

Can one person hang it?

It is much easier with two. A filled bag is awkward as well as heavy.

Does it come with chains?

It is supplied with its suspension system. Check the photos for the exact contents of current stock.

How long does delivery take?

Five to seven days across the UK, and delivery is free because this is over £75.

Can I return it?

Yes, if it is unused and in a saleable state. It is a stock item, so the full 14 day right to change your mind applies alongside your faulty goods rights.

Hanging a heavy bag at home without regretting it

4 min read The Outdoor Sports Company

The mount is the whole decision

A filled 5ft bag is heavy standing still. Hit it and the load through the fixing is several times that, repeatedly, in different directions.

Structural only. A joist, a rafter, a beam, or a wall bracket bolted into masonry. Not plasterboard, not a suspended ceiling, not a decorative beam.

Rated hardware. The bracket, the bolts and the swivel all have to be rated for a dynamic load, not a static one.

Check where it lands. A bag swings in a circle. Map that circle before you drill, and include the door.

Why noise matters more than you think

The reason most home bags stop being used is not the training. It is the racket.

A traditional hang transmits every impact into the structure, which travels through a house. A steel suspension system with a pivot damps a lot of that, which is what makes evening sessions possible when other people are in.

If you are in a flat, still think carefully. Quieter is not silent.

Using it properly

Wrap and glove up, every time. The bag is forgiving. Your metacarpals are not.

Work distance first. Stand where you can just touch it with a straight arm. Most beginners stand far too close and end up pushing rather than punching.

Hit through, not at. A bag that swings wildly is usually being pushed. Snap the shot and bring the hand back, and the bag moves less and you learn more.

Move. The single best thing about a hanging bag is that it comes back. Use that: hit, move, hit from a new angle.

Keeping it in shape

Rotate it. A quarter turn every few weeks stops one side taking every shot.

Wipe it. Sweat on synthetic leather works into the stitching.

Check the hardware monthly. Chains, swivel and bracket bolts. Two minutes, and it is the check that stops the failure everyone remembers.

Page summary

Punching Bag, also sold as a Boxing Bag or Heavy Bag, from The Outdoor Sports Company at myoutdoorsports.co.uk. A 5ft (150cm) hanging heavy bag that arrives PRE-FILLED and ready to use. Price GBP 99, reduced from GBP 129. The cover is a strong synthetic leather with a thick coating built for repeated contact, and an extended strap design spreads the load so the bag holds its shape over long periods of use. It hangs on a steel suspension system with a chain pivot, which reduces the noise generated compared with a traditional hanging bag and lets the bag rotate instead of winding the chains. It is used for boxing and striking training, including distance, footwork, speed and combination work. It must be hung from a bracket, beam or frame rated for the load and for a swinging weight; the mounting point, not the bag, is what limits where it can go. Care: wipe down after sessions, check chains, swivel and bracket bolts monthly, rotate the bag periodically. UK wide delivery, free over GBP 75, otherwise GBP 25, arriving in 5 to 7 days. A stock item, not made to order, so the 14 day change of mind cancellation right applies in full.
