Looking after it

Wipe the PU leather with a damp cloth and dry it. Keep it away from radiators and direct sun, which is what dries and cracks a PU surface over a couple of summers. Roll it rather than fold it into a sharp crease, and check the velcro is clear of carpet fluff so it still closes firmly.

A 240cm floor beam that grips the floor and rolls up.

High density EVA under a PU leather cover, a 10cm walking surface, anti slip granules underneath and a velcro closure instead of metal catches.

A 240cm floor beam with a 10cm wide walking surface, which is the standard beam width.

The core is 100% high density EVA, so it holds its shape rather than sagging in the middle over a season.

The underside is flat with anti slip granules, so it stays where it is put on wood, laminate or carpet.

It closes with velcro rather than metal latches, which is a deliberate choice around children's fingers.

Balance Beam

A competition beam is 10cm wide and 125cm off the floor. The width is the hard part. The height is what makes it frightening.

Balance Beam

A floor beam keeps the width and takes away the height, which is exactly what a child needs for the two years they spend learning to walk, turn and hold a line on 10cm.

Balance Beam

Balance Beam

The core is high density EVA rather than foam offcuts, so the middle does not sink under a foot after a month. The PU leather cover wipes clean and takes the shin knocks that are part of beam work.

Balance Beam

Underneath, a flat base with anti slip granules holds it on wood, laminate and carpet. A beam that slides during a turn teaches the wrong lesson.

Balance Beam

It closes with velcro. Metal latches on children's equipment pinch, and this one avoids the question entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is it?

240cm.

How wide is the top?

10cm, which is the same width as a competition beam.

How high does it sit?

It is a floor beam, so it sits on the floor. The height of a competition beam is what it deliberately leaves out.

What is inside it?

100% high density EVA.

Will it sag in the middle?

High density EVA is chosen so it does not. Soft foam beams are the ones that develop a dip where everyone steps.

What is the cover?

PU leather. It wipes clean and it is more forgiving on shins than a hard surface.

How much weight does it take?

Up to 75kg.

Can an adult use it?

Within the 75kg rating, yes. It is mainly bought for children.

Will it slide on wood or laminate?

The base is flat with anti slip granules, which is what holds it. On very polished floors, a mat under it adds grip.

Can I use it on carpet?

Yes, and it grips well on carpet.

Does it fold or roll?

It closes with velcro for storage, so it packs down rather than staying a 240cm bar in the room.

Why velcro instead of catches?

Metal latches pinch fingers. On children's equipment that is worth designing out.

Will the velcro wear out?

It lasts a long time if you keep carpet fluff and hair out of it. A quick clean with a comb restores grip.

Is it safe for flips?

It lowers the fall height, which is not the same as making a skill safe. Anything beyond walks, turns and holds belongs with a coach.

Should my child be supervised on it?

Yes. Beam work is supervised at every club and it should be at home too.

Do I need a mat with it?

It is floor level, so a mat is not essential. Many families put it on a gymnastics mat anyway for the landing area beside it.

What skills is it good for?

Walks, turns, holds, leaps at floor level, and anything about line and balance rather than height.

Can I use it outdoors?

On a flat patio for a session. PU leather does not enjoy being left in sun or rain.

How do I clean it?

Damp cloth, mild soap, dry it afterwards.

Will it crack over time?

PU cracks if it is baked. Store it out of direct sunlight and away from a radiator and it will not.

How heavy is it?

Light enough for one adult to carry and for an older child to move once it is closed.

Does it come in different colours?

Colours vary by batch, so check the photos for current stock.

Can I join two together?

They sit end to end but they are not designed to lock together, so treat two beams as two beams.

Does it come assembled?

Yes. Unroll it, open the velcro and it is ready.

How much space do I need?

240cm plus a clear step off at both ends, so about three metres of usable floor.

Will it damage my floor?

No. The base is soft and flat, which is gentler than the metal feet on a raised beam.

Is it noisy?

Quieter than any raised beam. There is no frame to knock.

Can it live under a bed?

Closed, in many cases yes, depending on the bed. That is the usual home for it.

How long does delivery take?

Five to seven days across the UK, and delivery is free because this is over £75.

Can I return it?

Yes. It is a stock item, so the full 14 day right to change your mind applies alongside your faulty goods rights.

Why a floor beam is the one to buy first

4 min read The Outdoor Sports Company

The width is the skill, the height is the fear

A competition beam is 10cm wide and stands 125cm off the floor.

Almost everything a gymnast learns on a beam is about the 10cm. Foot placement, line, where the eyes go, how to turn without drifting. None of that needs the height, and the height is what stops a child trying anything at all.

A floor beam keeps the exact width and removes the fear, which is why clubs use them for years before anyone goes near a raised beam.

Length changes what can be practised

Short beams are cheap and frustrating. Two steps and a turn and you are at the end.

At 240cm there is room to link movements, which is when practice starts to look like a routine instead of a drill. It is also long enough that a child can work out how to correct a drift halfway along, which is where most beam mistakes actually happen.

What to look for underneath

Two things decide whether a floor beam is any good, and both are on the bottom.

A flat base. A rounded or ridged base rocks, and rocking teaches a child to compensate for the equipment rather than to balance.

Grip. Anti slip granules on a flat base hold on wood, laminate and carpet. Any beam that travels during a turn is worse than no beam.

Supervision, honestly

The page this replaced said children could practise walks, turns and flips safely.

The first two are fair. A flip is a coached skill, and a beam at floor level does not change that. What a floor beam genuinely gives you is a lower consequence for the mistakes that happen while learning the basics.

Storage and life

Close it with the velcro rather than creasing it. EVA remembers a sharp fold.

Keep it out of the sun. PU leather dries and cracks with heat, and a beam parked in a conservatory ages fast.

Clean the velcro occasionally. Carpet fluff is what stops it closing firmly, and a comb sorts it in a minute.

Page summary

Balance Beam, also sold as Balance Beam Gymnastics, a Gymnastics Beam or a Gym Beam For Home, from The Outdoor Sports Company at myoutdoorsports.co.uk. A floor level gymnastics beam, 240cm long with a 10cm wide walking surface, which is the standard competition beam width. Price GBP 119, reduced from GBP 149. The core is 100% high density EVA, which holds its shape, and the cover is PU leather, which wipes clean. The flat underside carries anti slip granules for grip on wood, laminate or carpet. It closes with a velcro closure rather than metal latches, chosen so there is nothing to pinch small fingers during setup or storage. It supports up to 75kg. This is a FLOOR beam: it removes the height of a competition beam, not the difficulty of the skills, and practice should be supervised. Care: wipe the PU leather, keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators, keep the velcro clear of fluff. UK wide delivery, free over GBP 75, otherwise GBP 25, arriving in 5 to 7 days. A stock item, not made to order, so the 14 day change of mind cancellation right applies in full.
